Judy stories I want to find

Discuss all the girls comics that have appeared over the years. Excellent titles like Bunty, Misty, Spellbound, Tammy and June, amongst many others, can all be remembered here.

An update, Tammyfan. The National Library Of Wales only has issues of Judy from 1988 onwards. Cambridge University Library's collection of Judy doesn't start until 1986, but they have told me that according to their records the National Library Of Scotland appear to have the volumes for 1984. The National Library Of Scotland is searching its catalogue, and will ring me back as soon as they have some news. As it is now turned half past four I suspect that I won't hear from them before Monday, but never say never!

I assume you already have the Bodleian on your list of libraries to try? I am based in Oxford and can give them a go if you ever need me to :) (I work for Oxford Univ Press so am part of the university that way, which can be useful.)

Yes I have, comixminx, as it is one of the six legal deposit libraries, and I did ring them today. However, they weren't overly helpful. They did give me their appropriate email address so I can at least contact them with a specific query, but whereas the libraries of Scotland, Wales, and Cambridge did get one of their customer service reps to check their catalogues for me, the Bodleian merely told me how to access theirs, which I didn't then negotiate all that successfully, failing abysmally to get anywhere near to Judy. I was even less successful with Trinity College, Dublin because the phone at the other end started ringing before I had tapped in all the digits. A lady answered but she certainly wasn't in Dublin. She could have been Mrs Broomstick from Macclesfield for all I know. I apologised for disturbing her. Hopefully the National Library Of Scotland will get back to me tomorrow, or more likely Monday, with good news. I could ask Thomsons, of course, but they are an active and extremely busy firm so I will only do so as a last resort.

Thank you for the offer, as it is just possible that I might need to take it up. It's nice to know where you work, by the way. In what capacity are you involved with the publisher?

I work in computing but I originally started in the academic publishing side of things so have moved round in a couple of different roles.

Thank you, comixminx. If I'd been hazarding a guess I wouldn't have opted for computing. The control of language that is evident in your writing would have guided me in the general direction of proof reading, or more likely, reading to evaluate books that your company has been offered by optimistic members of the public in the hope of getting them accepted for publication.

Heh heh! Well, the area I started in was Philosophy academic books, not that I read any manuscripts for acceptance as I wasn't a commissioning editor. But I certainly did my share of proof reading and a wee bit of copy editing here and there. Can't pass a typo without wincing internally :)

Just a follow-up for Tammyfan. The instalment of Hard Times For Helen in Judy 1303 that I paid the National University of Scotland for a couple of weeks ago still hasn't arrived. When I get my hands on it I will of course let you know.

I think Phoenix can request photocopies to be made from certain libraries, and there is a charge for that I believe.

Yes. I must have mentioned it on a different thread. I think it was £9.60 for the three pages, and as they are in a fairly tightly-bound volume we might not get everything in the inner sections. But don't worry, Tammyfan. I wasn't planning on charging you. :)

Thank you, Phoenix. The photocopies probably got caught in the Christmas rush.
